GENERAL INFORMATION
Campeche - capital of the Mexican state of Campeche - is a beautiful Mexican city located on the northwestern side of the Yucatan Peninsula. This gorgeous, unique and picturesque baroque colonial city was designated a United Nations' World Cultural Heritage for Humanity (UNESCO) site in 1999. This is truly "tarpon-town" for baby tarpon!

LENGTH OF STAY
Packages and itineraries of any length can be accommodated.

THE FISHING
Campeche offers some of the finest and most consistent fishing for baby tarpon that have found anywhere in the Caribbean. Almost all of the fishing is site fishing from the bow of custom-built backcountry skiffs, with most tarpon averaging five to fifteen pounds. Tarpon in the 20 pound range are considered large in this area, but are routinely caught in open water and in the mangroves during the spring and summer months. The primary fishing area near Campeche is a huge network of mangrove lagoons, flats and creeks that begin immediately north of the city, running north for more than 120 kilometers all the way to Isla Arena.

The guides of Campeche Tarpon are hard working and enthusiastic, and they will work hard to put you on fish and ensure that your overall experience is as positive as possible. They are dedicated, professional and experienced, and they know their waters very well!

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
Boats used by Campeche Tarpon are clean and new custom-built backcountry skiffs that comfortably accommodate two fishermen and a guide. The boats are roomy, clean and comfortable with large, clean casting decks. These custom-built skiffs were built with fly fishermen in mind!

THE LODGING
Anglers booking through Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures and Campeche Tarpon have a choice of several different lodging options in Campeche. All lodging and accommodations can include any of the three options listed below. All can be included in the Yellow Dog package prices for Campeche.

Hacienda Puerta Campeche
A true four-star Starwood luxury hotel, the Hacienda Puerta Campeche may be the nicest hotel in the entire area. For couples of for those who prefer luxurious accommodations, the Puerta Campeche is the place! Adjacent to the historical "Puerta de Tierra", the Hacienda Puerta Campeche offers a unique experience to its guests. A collection of houses from the 17th Century have been carefully restored to become the most original hotel in the area. The hotel has 15 rooms and suites equipped with satellite television, air conditioning and dual line phones. Facilities within the hotel include a restaurant, lounge bar, business center, and swimming pool. Museums and shopping are within walking distance. Our favorite aspect of Puerta Campeche is the one-of-a-kind swimming pool that runs throughout the courtyard, through several buildings, and finally into a large jacuzzi inside the hotel's terrace.

Hotel Plaza Campeche
Located in the heart of Campeche's downtown historic district, the Hotel Plaza Campeche is within walking distance of the town's Cathedral Plaza, central park, the oceanfront Malecon, and a large number of restaurants and bars. The rooms at the Plaza are clean, modern and air conditioned, and the hotel features such amenities as a swimming pool, 24-hour cafe, bar, gift shop, laundry services, and close proximity to downtown. Lodging at the Plaza is included in standard Campeche Tarpon - Yellow Dog fishing packages.

Hotel Castle Mar
The Hotel Castle Mar is an excellent choice for the traveling angler who is looking for the true Campeche experience. The Castle Mar was initially built as army barracks before becoming one of the first hotels in the city. Operating as a hotel since the late 1800’s, Castle Mar is nestled right in the historic center of Campeche. Restaurants, fortifications, cathedrals and the city square are all within walking distance. This fascinating building has all the original tile floors, a nice pool area, and a grand atrium ideal for morning coffee or afternoon reading. Hotel Castle Mar is an excellent choice for those who would like to feel the true heartbeat of the city of Campeche.

HOW TO GET THERE

Merida is serviced by a number of major U.S. airlines that offer direct service from Houston, Dallas, Miami, and a number of other major U.S. cities. Upon arrival into Merida, you will clear immigration and customs before heading to the main lobby and reception area of the airport, where you will be met by a Campeche Tarpon representative and driver. Ciudad Del Carmen is serviced daily by a direct Continental flight from Houston at approximately 9:40 AM. Both Merida and Ciudad Del Carmen are the fastest, easiest ways to access Campeche, and both involve the shortest vehicle transfers (Approx. 1.5 hours versus 5 hours from Cancun).

If you are planning to travel to Campeche from Cancun, you will be transferred by air-conditioned vehicle to Campeche, a road trip of approximately 5 hours. The transfers to Campeche from Merida are included in the Campeche Tarpon fishing package, while round-trip transfers to Campeche from Cancun are an additional $250.00 per trip.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within 6 months of trips dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blank, unstamped pages remaining in back, and that it is not torn, delaminated, or damaged in any way. No visas or inoculations are required for U.S. citizens. A Mexican departure tax is payable at the airport when leaving Mexico. Some airlines include this as a prepaid part of your ticket. Please check with your travel agent or carrier to verify this.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city of Campeche may be among the most beautiful and unique in all of Southern Mexico. Visitors will enjoy strolling the clean and colorful streets of the historic downtown area. Here, one can find numerous shops, museums, art galleries, outdoor restaurants, historic cathedrals and churches. The city is also home to several outstanding examples of military architecture, including the Fort of San Jose el Alto, the Puerta de Tierra access door, Fuerta de San Miguel, and numerous other sites. For those interested in Mayan ruins and ancient Mayan architecture, the Campeche region is home to some of the largest, most spectacular, and least visited sites anywhere in the Mayan world. Archeological sites such as Edzna, Balamku, Chicanna, and several others are all easy day trips from Campeche. If you are traveling to Campeche with a non-angler or a non-angling spouse, the owners of Campeche Tarpon will be happy to arrange guided tours and activities.
