THE FISHING
Pesca Maya offers the best of both fly fishing worlds – a short boat ride to the productive flats of Ascension Bay or a quick trip to the more secluded lagoons that surround it. Whether you are wading the immense expanse of flats for schools of bonefish and permit or casting in lagoons for tarpon, snook or barracuda, this is an ideal fishery for novice and seasoned saltwater anglers alike. If you’re a beginning saltwater angler, Ascension Bay is a one of the best places in the world to take your first bonefish on a fly. For more seasoned anglers, this is one of the world’s best locations to take a permit on a fly! With hundreds of square miles of flats, it is not uncommon to see bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and barracuda all in the same day. Because of these strong resident numbers and additional seasonal migrations of snook and tarpon, there have arguably been more Grand Slams and Super Grand Slams (a tarpon, bonefish, permit and snook all in the same day) caught here than anywhere else in the world.
The “typical” conditions that one encounters when fly fishing the Ascension Bay area are as close to perfect as a saltwater angler can hope for. Bright sun, white sand flats, and crystal clear water create outstanding conditions for sighting and stalking fish. Even when the wind is blowing hard, the guides can usually find a lee in the mangrove-lined lagoons which offers easier conditions for fly casting. Classic 23-foot Mexican-style pangas provide comfortable water transport – particularly in strong winds and rough seas – and a stable casting platform for fly fishing. These pangas are easy to pole in shallow water and have for decades served the region's fishermen and guides. Whether wading the warm sandy flats or fishing from the boat, Ascension Bay is an ideal destination for the saltwater angler.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
Boats used by the lodge are 23-foot Mexican super pangas that can accommodate two fishermen, a guide, and an apprentice guide. The boats are roomy and comfortable with large, clean casting decks. If possible, anglers should plan on bringing all equipment such as rods, reels, and fly lines with them. The lodge does have some demo and rental rods available. The lodge also has a good selection of flies, leaders and tippet for sale in the small gift and tackle shop.
THE LODGING
Pesca Maya features a number of different accommodation options, with primary operations focusing on the SeaClusion House. All of the rooms are clean and comfortable, and each features a private bathroom, hot and cold water, ceiling fans, air conditioning, and screened porches and windows, allowing a constant flow of the ocean breeze. The lodge is located on an untouched, solitary white sand beach, surrounded by turquoise waters and a magnificent coral reef only 90 yards from the beach.
SeaClusion House is currently the epicenter of activities at Pesca Maya, and is home to the lodge's bar, dinning area, small tackle shop, and common area. Here you will eat all of your meals, enjoy cold beers and frosty margaritas on the porch, tie flies at the "community" fly tying bench, and swap stories with fellow guests and anglers. All of the meals at the lodge are usually served home-style, with a breakfast buffet, do-it-yourself lunches, and an extensive dinner menu that changes nightly. You can enjoy an American-style breakfast, a cooler full of food for your lunch on the water, and a dinner menu that includes a variety soups, salads and vegetables, fish, steak, shrimp, fresh lobster and chicken. Beverages and drinks include purified water, sodas, beer, wine on the table and a variety of cocktails including margaritas, rum & coke, daiquiris, and more. If you desire imported liquors or a particular brand, feel free to bring your own bottle along. They will serve it to you at the bar at no extra charge! If you require a special diet, low fat or low cholesterol meals, no sugar, no sea food, etc. the kitchen will be happy to accommodate you.
