THE FISHING
Smallmouth Bass
Ely, Minnesota, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and Quetico are home to world class smallmouth bass fishing, and smallmouth bass on a fly rod are absolutely dyn-o-mite!! If you haven't fished for Smallies, you've got to try it! These fish fight harder pound-for-pound than any other freshwater fish. Unlike largemouth bass that give up after a few short bursts, smallies never quit fighting.

The action is absolutely amazing!  The smallmouth bass is one of the most prized game fish of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico and the perfect adversary for the fly-fishing angler. These rod bending, surface smacking “bronze-backs” readily attack top water presentations, and are a consistent producer throughout the canoe season. Their relentless fighting ability is known everywhere, thus providing the perfect adversary for the fly-fisher person to test their abilities against. This trip will focus on the special techniques required to catch these fish and will incorporate casting techniques, fly tying, and catch and release.

Northern Pike
The Boundary Waters, Ely and Quetico receive a lot of attention for its bass fishing, but many people overlook its potential as an excellent northern pike fishery. Pike up to 35-40” are common and readily take a fly.  Moose Track Adventures guides now have specific areas to take customers that produce excellent fly fishing for pike all season long. Peak times for pike are May through June and September through November.  And while casting for northern pike, there is always a good chance of tangling with a huge smallmouth bass.

Musky
Believe it or not, the Ely, Minnesota area has some of the best in the state.  Guided Musky Fly Fishing Trips concentrate on Minnesota’s famous Lake Vermillion and surrounding Department of Natural Resources-managed muskie lakes.  Fly fishing for muskie is an exhilarating and often tiring experience.  Be prepared for the battle of a lifetime.  For those who have fished for musky, you know they can be a difficult fish to catch whether fly fishing or bait casting.  In fact they are classified as the fish of 10,000 cast, but if the timing is right the action is unbeatable!  The best time for fly fishing for musky is May through June and September through October, so book your trip early.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
For those choosing a deluxe wilderness canoe and fly fishing trip, MTA uses only the latest and greatest ultra light weight canoes and gear including We-no-nah Kevlar canoes and Marmot or Northface tents and sleeping bags.

If you chose to stay at the lodge and do guided day trips, they utilize a variety of boat options ranging from flat bottom Jon boats, 16 foot Lund fishing boats, square stern canoes, to a 19.5 Lund Tyee. They aim to be flexible and customize the trips to your needs as well as where the best fishing is at the time.
